St Columba and a haven of peace
Take the short ferry journey to Iona from the Isle of Mull and step off onto one of Scotland’s most sacred sites. This tiny island has been a vibrant centre of Christian worship ever since St Columba arrived in AD 563. A visit to the Abbey, St Oran’s chapel and Reilig Odhráin; the traditional resting place of early Scottish kings as well as the ruins of the Nunnery are sure to be highlights.
At only 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long it’s also a paradise for walkers, photographers, wildlife and flora enthusiasts with plenty of beautiful beaches to explore. Mementoes of your visit are easy to come by and whether you choose one of the white and green Iona marble pebbles (known as ‘Columba’s Tears’) when exploring Columba’s Bay or something from the local community craft shop, the jewelers or the food larder you’ll leave Iona the way everyone does; with a little more serenity!
